Starry Eyes (2014)

Alex Essoe stars as a young woman who’ll do anything to become a successful actress. When a mysterious Hollywood secret society ‘auditions’ her and offers her everything she’s ever wanted, she stops at nothing and sacrifices everything for eternal fame. Essoe does a good job and there are some nifty makeup effects in the later half of the film, but I really disliked Essoe’s character (as written) and had a hard time investing interest in her plight. The first three quarters of the movie is a tedious slog. I found myself restlessly ahead of the narrative until the the final act, which pulls out an odd twist or two that I found more jarring than satisfying. I should also mention I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to witchy-poo cult members in K-Mart hoods.
