No Way Out (1987)
[6]
Kevin Costner stars as a Navy officer who gets enlisted by the Secretary of Defense (Gene Hackman) to get secret information from the CIA about a new Russian submarine project. Both men are sleeping with the same woman (Sean Young), but only Costner knows it. When the Secretary murders Young in a fit of rage, he tries to use Costner to help him cover up the crime. Costner plays along, while covertly trying to expose Hackman as the murderer. Will Costner succeed in getting the evidence he needs, or will he be framed by Hackman?
I was a little bored with No Way Out for the first half-hour because I thought I knew where it was going as soon as both men started sleeping with the same woman. But once Young’s out of the picture (along with all the cheesy ‘falling in love’ montages), the movie gets much more interesting. The film even throws in a possible gay lover for the Secretary (Will Patton) and a completely unecessary — though interesting — twist ending. Iman and George Dzundza are memorable in supporting roles. Directed by Roger Donaldson (Species, Dante’s Peak).
