Splash (1984)
[6] Splash is a sweet-enough fantasy rom-com from Ron Howard (his second feature). Tom Hanks stars as a man who falls in love with a mysterious woman who just happens to be a mermaid. Darryl Hannah plays the fish; John Candy and…
Above Suspicion (1943)
[7] Fred MacMurray and Joan Crawford star as newlyweds who get roped into spying for British intelligence in Nazi Germany. The tone here is light-hearted. Despite the prospect of serious danger, Crawford and MacMurray's characters actually enjoy trying their hand at espionage.…
The Lords of Salem (2013)
[8] I haven't particularly liked any Rob Zombie movies until this one, which is strange because his devoted fans -- by and large -- detest this movie. The Lords of Salem features masterful style and cinematic execution, often reminding me more of…
Behind the Candleabra (2013)
[7] Michael Douglas plays Liberace for director Steven Soderbergh in this fast-paced tragi-romantic-dark comedy about the famed pianist's five-year relationship with a man forty years his senior. Matt Damon plays young Scott Thorson, the naive pretty boy who falls under Liberace's spell.…
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990)
[6] A paperboy is imprisoned by a woman (Deborah Harry) who plans to cook and eat him, but he's able to delay her meal by telling her three tales of terror. Tales from the Darkside: The Movie is a somewhat underwhelming horror…

[4] Dead psychic vampire raises the dead to torment a girl trapped in a mausoleum. Okay, sure. A little slower-paced than I would like. Also, the subplot with the dead psychic's daughter listening to her dad's tapes is pretty dull. We get…
Screwballs (1983)
[7] Screwballs and others of its ilk were one of few ways a teenager could hope to 'sneak a peek' in the pre-internet days. Today, boobs are just a mouse click away, and you don't have to be coy about it, either…
Eden Lake (2008)
[8] This is probably one of the most brutal and harrowing horror films of the past ten or fifteen years. Michael Fassbender hopes to pop the question to his girlfriend Kelly Reilly over a romantic weekend that spirals into a nail-biting fight…
A Boy and His Dog (1975)
[7] In this adaptation of Harlan Ellison's novella, a horny teenager and his sarcastic dog communicate telepathically while wandering a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of food and women. The heart of this film is the antagonistic yet loving relationship between its title…
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
[7] Jeepers Creepers begins with a Spielbergesque road 'Duel', and then evolves into a disturbing mystery. Justin Long and Gina Philips give solid performances playing a brother and sister who unwittingly fall prey to the 'Creeper', director Victor Salva's stab at incarnating…
