The output from Britain’s Hammer Films is usually surprisingly entertaining, but such is not the case for this dreadfully dull would-be thriller. Terror of the Tongs is about a sea captain (Geoffrey Toone) who stops at nothing to expose and destroy a mysterious gang of Hong Kong criminals (led by Hammer regular Christopher Lee) who murder his young daughter to keep their identities a secret. That murder is the most surprising and dramatically compelling moment in the movie. The rest is dreary procedural fare, low in suspense and nearly devoid of any visceral thrills. Making matters worse, Lee and many others in mostly white, English cast are made up to look Asian. (The makeup on one actor makes him look more Klingon than Hong Kongese.)

Directed by Anthony Bushell. With Yvonne Monlaur and Marne Maitland.
