Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016)

If you’re a fan of the ill-mannered British TV show, you’ll probably enjoy Eddy and Patsy’s first big bloody screen adventure. Me? I think it’s one of the funniest TV shows EVER made, so I drove two hours to the nearest theater playing the AbFab movie. As soon as Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley pop on-screen as their boozy, sycophantic characters, I settled in and enjoyed spending more time with my girls. The entire cast is back — including Julia Sawalha as Eddy’s long-suffering daughter, June Whitfield as Eddy’s aloof mother, and Jane Horrocks as Eddy’s daffy personal assistant. Several supporting players from the series make cameo appearances, and there are enough inside jokes and references to make long-time fans feel rewarded.

The story is threadbare enough to give the talent a wide berth for character-motivated comedy. Eddy and Patsy, in their never-ending quest for celebrity and fortune, accidentally kill supermodel Kate Moss. When the world turns against them, they flee Britain to the French Riviera and wacky hijinks ensue! My favorites include a flight attendant’s futile attempt to incapacitate Patsy with a stun gun, and the lengths to which Patsy will go to marry a wealthy widower. And I loved how the ending pays homage to Some Like It Hot.

The movie is about getting old and fat — but not useless!  So I hope we see more from Saunders and company. Because these characters have been aging ever since they were introduced in 1994. They’re above and beyond age at this point. They’re legends. And I for one will follow them to the grave so long as they make the effort to entertain. (Yes, when it comes to AbFab, I am indeed a fanboy.)
