Career Opportunities (1991)

Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction, Field of Dreams) stars a high school grad who freeloads off his parents until a menial overnight job at Target introduces him to the love of his life, played by the stunning Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth, A Beautiful Mind). I like the idea of two nascent lovers spending the night alone in a Target store, but this John Hughes production reeks of several that came before it, especially Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Home Alone (complete with two bungling crooks who break into the store and instigate all the third-act whackiness). Whaley’s character is too annoying to invest in and I also have a hard time swallowing the ‘poor little rich girl’ routine thrust upon Connelly’s character. The mention that her father beats her is jarringly out of place in a movie that otherwise keeps things pretty goofy. But at least we get to see Connelly ride one of those department store coin-operated horseys.
