Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

[5] Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice feels like a movie with an identity crisis, tasked with performing two disparate, thankless tasks. The first is to set up a big fight between two iconic superheroes. You know, the kind of thing that…
Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool (2016)

[7] Ryan Reynolds was born to play a wise-cracking vigilante, and indeed Deadpool comes off a bit like a higher-stakes Van Wilder. The story centers around the origin of the character, how he discovers he has terminal cancer and takes a chance…
Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

[6] Jupiter Ascending is probably the last big-budget studio picture from Andy & Lana Wachowski, the creators of The Matrix trilogy and some other movies that failed to live up to expectation. I admire the Wachowski's ambition and I appreciate how they…
Dredd (2012)

Dredd (2012)

[6] Pete Travis directs from a script by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Sunshine) this second attempt to bring the comic book character Judge Dredd to the big screen. This is a smaller-scale production than the 1995 Sylvester Stallone version, but it's a…
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

[7] The skeleton crew of an isolated police precinct battle a vengeful street gang that lay siege to the building. John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) writes and directs this simple, straight-forward, solidly executed action/thriller, imbuing it with his love of westerns. Carpenter…
Battle Royale (2000)

Battle Royale (2000)

[8] In a not-too-distant future Japan, the government cracks down on adolescent shenanigans by randomly selecting one 9th grade class per year to duke it out on a remote island until only one student is standing. Battle Royale starts off with a…
American Ultra (2015)

American Ultra (2015)

[7] Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in this edgy action comedy about a stoner convenience clerk who discovers he's a sleeper agent and deadly assassin for the CIA. Together with his devoted girlfriend, he dodges CIA operatives ordered to destroy him…
Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic World (2015)

[9] I enjoyed the hell out of Jurassic World and I don't care who knows it. I don't know who the director is (Colin Trevorrow, anyone?), but I thought this was easily the scariest and most entertaining Jurassic Park flick since the…
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

[9] George Miller has stopped making talking pig and dancing penguin movies (Babe, Happy Feet) long enough to give us another installment in his seminal apocalyptic Mad Max series. The result is probably one of the greatest non-stop action movies ever made.…
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

[6] My favorite part of this Avengers sequel is when the bad guy, a robot voiced by James Spader, first pulls himself together and wobbles confidently in front of the superheroes at the end of a house party. It's a good introduction…
