Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002)

George Clooney directs this quirky tale based on the possibly true story of Chuck Barris, creator of The Dating Game and The Gong Show, and who may also have been an assassin for the CIA. That is, if we’re to believe his memoir. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is an okay movie, anchored by a solid leading performance from Sam Rockwell. But I had a hard time investing in it because I still don’t know how seriously to take it. The whole “is it true or not” angle distances me from the subject matter, and whether it’s true or not, I just don’t like Barris as a character. He’s a womanizer and he casually enjoys killing people? The supporting characters, played by Drew Barrymore, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts, are all more like cartoons than real people, which further encourages me to not take the movie seriously. So I guess it’s a comedy? And I rarely like comedies? I don’t know. Sometimes I just don’t care, and I don’t really know why.
