Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968)
[6]
A passenger plane crashes after a close encounter with a UFO. The survivors are left in a remote desert to defend themselves against a blob-like alien that creates a vaginal slit in its victims’ foreheads before crawling inside their brains, commandeering their bodies, and turning them into blood-sucking vampires. Needless to say, this film is Japanese.
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell is gitchy-cool for it’s model photography and weird special effects, even if the storyline is your basic ‘ten little Indians’ procedural. Half the run-time is spent with the passengers arguing among themselves and creating their own drama, and half of it is spent trying to get away from the slit-faced alien. Its hyper-stylized photography and occasional bizarre imagery are the movie’s greatest strengths. Kudos to a commitment to bleakness here, too, especially with an ending that pays tribute to Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
