The Deep (1977)

Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset play deep sea divers who stumble upon a sunken supply of morphine and Spanish treasure. They enlist the help of Robert Shaw (in one of his final performances) to excavate their findings, all while fighting off a giant moray eel and a voodoo drug lord played by Louis Gossett, Jr. The Deep, written by Peter Benchley, is an obvious attempt to cash in on the success of Jaws, but it’s nowhere near as thrilling as that earlier masterpiece. The film’s main problem is that after every dive, there’s an insufferable scene where the trio of lead actors talk about what they saw, trying to figure out where it came from. This, when all the audience really wants is for Jacqueline Bisset to get her T-shirt wet again.
