The Final Destination (2009)

If you saw the three that came before it, you know exactly what to expect from The Final Destination, and you’ll get nothing more — perhaps a bit less. It follows the same plot as the other movies — a kid has a premonition that everyone’s going to die (in this case, at a Nascar race), he ends up saving his doubtful friends, and then the accident happens and they all feel really lucky for surviving. That is, until Death comes a’calling, and the characters die one by one even though they think they can do something to ‘break the chain’.
I actually really enjoy the first film. It was novel, the characters were actually somewhat likeable and engaging, it was stylishly directed, and the Rube Goldberg-esque deaths were inventive and unpredictable. But each new sequel gets less creative and more predictable. In this latest sequel, the characters are completely stock and the death sequences are uninspired. For a film of this sort, the gore is minimal and the visual effects are somewhat lackluster as well. On the plus side, Mykelti Williamson makes the most of his supporting role and the final act musters up a little suspense. I can’t recommend this movie, but if the night is right, you might find The Final Destination serviceable.
