The House on Skull Mountain (1974)

This low-rent, paint-by-numbers snooze-fest features a foursome of estranged family members brought together to the eponymous location after the death of their matriarch. But little do they know someone in the house is practicing voodoo magic to kill everyone off one by one. Will they find out who the killer is? Will you give a shit if they do? I didn’t. The House on Skull Mountain reeks of made-for-TV movies from the ’70s in all the worst ways possible. The story falls into a tedious cycle of voodoo killings, but don’t expect any suspense or visceral effects. This is unimaginitive, G-rated stuff. And, oh, the acting. One of the women (Xernona Clayton) is as stiff as a board, and when she screams, it’s a laugh riot. (She screams three times, so at least you get three laughs from the film.) Mike Evans of TV’s Good Times and Victor French of Little House on the Prairie are both featured, but they can’t do much with the Ed Woodian script and to make matters worse, the entire film sounds badly dubbed. If you can make it to the end, you’ll get to see a weird voodoo dance ritual involving extras, snakes, and kooky chanting. But it’s little reward for eighty minutes of dreck.
