The Kindred (1987)

Somehow, Oscar-winners Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night) and Kim Hunter (A Streetcar Named Desire) got swindled into starring in this sub-par creature feature about a scientist (Hunter) who performs Frankenstein-like genetic experiments in her basement. On her deathbed, she begs her son (a wooden David Allen Brooks) to destroy her experiments before it’s too late. And wouldn’t you know it? One of them turns out to be Brooks’ bro — a monster that shares his own DNA. I’m all for mad scientists and genetic experimentation in horror movies, and The Kindred could have turned out pretty decent. But it’s way too talky, the performances aren’t good, the special effects leave something to be desired, and the climax is… well, kinda anti-climactic. David Newman turns in an effective score, though.
