6 Souls (2010)

Julianne Moore stars as a psychiatrist who discovers the multiple personalities of a patient are actually murder victims. Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) plays the patient, and normally I love these two leading actors. But we’ve seen Moore do this kind of thing before and Rhys Meyers never quite convinces me that he’s not just showing off with all the different accents and quirky mannerisms he gives each murder victim. The film begins like a psychological thriller, but then drifts into supernatural horror territory — it’s a jarring transition that strained my suspension of disbelief. There are kernels of good ideas in 6 Souls (aka Shelter), but even at its best possible execution, it feels like a movie at least ten years past the prime of the serial killer/mystery sub-genre. Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) is a stand-out, playing the mother of one of the murder victims.
