Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

As far as early ’80s made-for-TV movies, you could do a lot worse than Dark Night of the Scarecrow. Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles, Darkman) plays as mentally-challenged man who is murdered by vigilantes after being falsely accused of assaulting a young girl. When the vigilantes start getting killed off one by one, they start to wonder — is Drake still alive and exacting his revenge? One of the movie’s strengths is that you’re never quite sure what the answer is. The ‘revenge’ portion of the movie drags a little while you wait for all the bad guys to get their just desserts, but Charles Durning (Tootsie, The Sting) carries the film nicely as the head vigilante and the final act wraps things up with a satisfying showdown.
