Earth Girls Are Easy (1988)

[4]

Three furry aliens crash-land in Geena Davis’ swimming pool in the San Fernando Valley. After determining they mean no harm, Davis decides to have her pool drained so they can repair their ship and go home. But in the meantime, she asks her cosmetologist friend (Julie Brown) to shave them down to pass for human. As they party hard and spar with Davis’ lecherous fiancée, love blooms between Davis and the alien leader — played by her The Fly co-star Jeff Goldblum.

Earth Girls Are Easy is a cartoon fluff ball of a movie with a kinetic, hyper-colorful style and a thoroughly goofy sense of humor. Complete with musical numbers, the film seems to aspire for the cult status of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as subversive, quotable or catchy as that movie. There are certainly some laughs to be had from the aliens’ fish-out-of-water orientation with Earth and humans, with co-stars Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans stealing many scenes as Goldblum’s whacky underlings. But without a compelling hook to give the story momentum, Earth Girls Are Easy never reaches verisimilitude and ends up playing more like a comedy sketch that overstays its welcome.

With Michael McKean. Directed by prolific music video director Julien Temple.
