Overboard (1987)
[6]
A nasty heiress (Goldie Hawn) falls off her yacht and gets amnesia, only to be discovered by a handyman (Kurt Russell) she once screwed over. To get revenge, he convinces her that she’s his wife and the mother of his three unruly sons. Overboard‘s screenplay mines the tried-and-true ‘fish out of water’ scenario to great effect, but make no mistake about it — this movie rests squarely on the shoulders of its stars, two of the most likeable actors on the planet, playing character types each are famous for. Russell is the trickster with the shit-eating-grin and Hawn plays icy-cool incredulity like nobody’s business. If you like these performers, you’ll enjoy Overboard — cheesy romance, formulaic plot and all — it’s really that simple. With Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, and Roddy McDowall (see? even the supporting cast is irresistible.) Directed by Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, Beaches).
