Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy masterpiece is a volatile blend of whimsy and horror that dares to explore the depths of human evil through the eyes of an innocent child. The film is brutal, heartbreaking, and gorgeous. Del Toro’s unique style is on full display here, in the conceptual design, the fluid camera work, and in the delicate performances. Young Ivana Baquero gives a solid child performance, while skilled pantomimist Doug Jones brings a couple of marvelous creatures to life, including the titular faun and an absolutely horrifying demon who keeps its eyes in the palms of its hands. Maribel Verdu is also very good as the brave houseworker who stands up to the villian of the movie, a ruthless war captain (Sergi Lopez) who lacks any regard for human life. Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro controls a muted color palette, giving the film a faded storybook quality, while composer Javier Navarrete anchors his exquisite score with a chilling lullaby that you’ll never forget.
