About Last Night (1986)

Edward Zwick (Glory, Legends of the Fall) directs this yuppie ‘windy city’ romance starring brat-packers Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. It’s your typical boy-meets-girl story. They have sex, they fall in love, they move in together, they fight, they make up, they fight, they make up… and in the end we’re all reminded how much men suck. (No, really.) In lesser hands, this sort of thing can be nauseating. And while About Last Night certainly doesn’t break any molds or deliver any genuine surprises, Lowe and Moore do commendable jobs making us care about them… at least a little. Some credit is probably owed to David Mamet, who wrote the play on which the script is based. The dialogue is mostly fresh, even as the thin plot grows stale. Some of the love scenes get pretty steamy and the Chicago backdrop is put to excellent use. If only the same could be said for supporting players Jim Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins, both stuck playing annoying sidekicks.
