Ewan McGregor plays a man falling in love with a woman after his father has passed away. His father, played by Christopher Plummer, was married to Ewan’s mom for decades before coming out as gay and enthusiastically embracing a new outlook on life. Ewan’s character recalls his relationship with his father and tries applying lessons learned to his new relationship (Melanie Laurent). Now, I love Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, but this movie depressed the ever-living shit out of me. Well made? Sure. Something to say? Maybe something thin about seizing the day. I like that it moves quickly, in vignette fashion, but dislike the gimmicky tricks it employs (like intercutting of still images and subtitles for what the dog is thinking). Mostly, I dislike that it’s about really sad people being sad and shit.

Academy Award: Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Plummer)
