Richard Linklater writes and directs Everybody Wants Some!! as sort of a follow-up to his own Dazed and Confused. It’s the early ’80s and a group of college baseball players live together in a couple of houses off-campus. The movie has absolutely no over-arching narrative. The guys just party and hang out, practice their ball, and try to pick up chicks. It’s just a slice of life movie with a bunch of 30-year-old men playing 20-year-0ld men — which is off-putting. I wasn’t bored watching Everybody Wants Some!!, but I was never excited or enveloped by the movie, either. It’s rarely funny, rarely sexy, and rarely rousing. Leading man Blake Jenner is easy on the eyes and supporting actress Zoey Deutch effortlessly steals the show. But otherwise, Everybody Wants Some!! kinda just lays there under the long, dark shadow of Dazed and Confused.
