The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)
[5]
A London couple begin to suspect their new lodger might be a serial killer who preys on blonde women. And it just so happens their daughter is blonde. And dating one of the detectives on the case. Even though it’s a short film, I had trouble keeping alert throughout The Lodger — maybe I’m just not accustomed to watching many silent films. Still, I was empathetic to Ivor Novello’s “Lodger” character, and enjoyed several scenes and cinematic inventions the movie has to offer. Moreover, it is interesting to see some of the recurring themes director Alfred Hitchcock would carry over the remainder of his long and distinguished career — including blonde heroines, mistaken identity, and fear of the law.
