Go (1999)

Of all the edgy, non-linear pretenders to the throne that came in the wake of Pulp Fiction, Doug Liman’s Go may be among the best. The story weaves in and around a handful of disparate characters that interact at a grocery store before heading their separate ways. The movie keeps returning to the grocery store scene (Groundhog Day style) but follows a different character or set of characters from there. Eventually, some of the storylines connect and collide. Sarah Polley plays the check-out girl who’s desperate to find rent money, even if it means ripping off a drug dealer (Timothy Olyphant) and putting her life on the line. Taye Diggs, Breckin Meyer, and James Duvall head up the second interconnecting storyline, playing friends who head to Vegas for a good time only to get embroiled in a drug-fueled car chase through the city. And in the third major storyline, Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf play gay actors bribed into wearing a wire tap to help the police entrap a drug dealer. Man, drugs play a big part in Go, don’t they?

In lesser hands, I could take this kind of movie or leave it, but Liman puts together a pretty good roster of actors that are never boring to watch. Liman’s photography is also pretty striking, and the soundtrack is pretty fun as well.

With Katie Holmes, Melissa McCarthy, and William Fichtner.
