Count Yorga, Vampire (1970)

[3]

Two Los Angeles couples partake in a seance, not realizing their medium, Count Yorga, is a vampire with intentions of adding the women to his harem. One of the couples, Paul and Erica, take the vampire home and have no memory of what happened afterwards. But when Paul finds Erica chowing down on the family kitten the next day, he’s pretty sure something is wrong. When their doctor discovers she’s missing a lot of blood, he deduces it must be a case of vampirism. The doctor then teams up with the gentlemen to drive a stake through the heart of Count Yorga.

I suppose the interest here might have been in taking a vampire story out of its usual gothic setting and transplanting it in contemporary L.A. But that doesn’t carry much interest 40-plus years after the film’s release. The characters are thinly drawn, the performances lacking, and the cinematography shoddy — with shots frequently going out of focus and establishing shots being consumed by total darkness. There’s very little visceral horror and tension is sorely lacking. In other words, Yorga is a snooze fest. With Robert Quarry, Roger Perry, and Michael Murphy.
