Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star as private detectives who team up to solve the mystery of a missing porn star in this action-comedy from writer/director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight). Black does a terrific job showcasing the characters in a twisty-turny mystery plot that could easily have overwhelmed the fun. Crowe and Gosling shine, generating enough charisma and chemistry to make me want to see a sequel (though box office returns make that seem unlikely).
The Nice Guys doesn’t quite reach the level of Lethal Weapon in terms of action spectacle or compelling character, but it comes close enough to make it worth your while. The nifty ’70s wardrobe and art direction are a definite bonus. The icing on the cake is perhaps Gosling’s pre-teen daughter, played by Angourie Rice. She’s along for the ride throughout most of the movie, challenging Crowe’s character to be more merciful and pushing her father to be more bold. The three of them conjure a warm, snarky, family vibe that becomes the life blood of the entire film. Matt Bomer gives a fun villainous performance and Kim Basinger makes a rare but welcome return to the big screen in a small but pivotal role.
With Margaret Qualley, Keith David, Yaya DaCosta, Beau Knapp, and Lois Smith.
