In this psychological thriller from Hammer Films, members of the Ashby estate await their inheritance as a mysterious figure (Alexander Davion) shows up on their doorstep. He claims to be the youngest son, who left a suicide note eight years ago and was presumed dead. Everyone has their suspicions, but the truth isn’t fully revealed until the end of the movie. Paranoiac is well directed by Freddie Francis, a two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer and Hammer alum. Oliver Reed (Curse of the Werewolf), gives a memorable, splashy performance as the surly, drunken older brother. Paranoiac isn’t quite as twisting or engrossing as Hammer’s earlier psychological thriller Scream of Fear, but it moves pretty well for an insular, low-budget thriller. Fans of more traditional horror may enjoy the third act inclusion of a masked killer and the discovery of a mummified body.
With Janette Scott, Sheila Burrell, Liliane Brousse, and Maurice Denham.
